I love to watch television, it’s one of my favorite vegetative things to do after a long day of working, writing and child caring… So, when I was offered the opportunity to watch an advance screening of the CW Network’s “Emily Owens M.D.” pilot I immediately jumped at the chance!
I had heard of this new series when the CW picked it up this spring for their fall lineup. It looked like something I would enjoy watching because it’s not one of those melodramatic hospital shows. Instead, it has lots of humor and real-life situations of the typical first days on the job as an intern.
The series is produced by Jennie Snyder Urman, who is also a screenwriter, television writer and a mom of two kids under the age of 3. So, not only is her show interesting because of its story line, but because it is written by a mom who’s like so many of us. She works, takes care of small children, and she does everything else in between! She’s also often felt socially awkward, which is surely something I can relate to as well…
Anyway, as to the show itself, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed watching the pilot episode, and really can’t wait to watch the series this fall. “Emily Owens M.D.” is very well written, with lots of witty dialogue and crazy situations we can all relate to. You know, the typical awkward moments some of us have endured as one of those not-that-eloquent-in-communicating people.
“Emily Owens M.D.” also reminds us of how we never really escape the high-school cliques we’ve all experienced growing up… Turns out that working in a hospital is just like being in school. All the groups from back then are all translated into the different doctors and hospital jobs.
The jocks are into orthopedic surgery, the popular girls are in plastic surgery, next-door good girls get into obstetrics and the stoners become anesthesiologists… You get the drift. But, poor Emily is not really into any group, as her new friend on the job explains to her that general surgeons are all a big mix of everything.
However, she just feels like the same awkward teen she was in high-school; always saying the wrong thing and getting extremely sweaty arm pits every time she gets nervous or excited. And, things just go downhill on her first day at the job when her plan to tell her crush that she likes him totally backfires…
But, on the positive side, Emily is an awesome doctor, and manages to even save a live on her first day, and does not disappoint her superiors in her extensive medical knowledge, either.
I can’t wait to chronicle Emily’s adventures this fall as she becomes a skilled doctor, and eventually a surgeon, while still confronting the high-school-like environment of hospital life. “Emily Owens M.D.” is definitely going to be on my favorite shows list this fall!
The actress who portrays Emily Owens is Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep‘s daughter!) and she is truly awesome in this show! Her humor and wit is played perfectly for the part and she really brings out the character so well.
